Nethybridge Hotel – review

The Nethybridge Hotel is yet another countryside hotel we’ve visited using Itison voucher – a one-night stay in a double room with three-course dinner, glass of wine and full Scottish breakfast for only £59. The hotel occupies an impressive, Victorian building in a small village of Nethy Bridge, in the very heart of Strathspey. Being located just a short distance from places such as Inverness, Aviemore, Grantown-on-Spey and Boat of Garten, it is a perfect base for exploring the mountains […]

Mountains to climb in our lifetime

Some dream about bagging all 14 eight-thousanders, the others have an ambition of climbing the Seven Summits (the highest mountains on each of the seven continents), yet others want to do all this faster and better, breaking limits and setting new records. In comparison, our small (though still growing) mountaineering bucket list may seem rather modest; however, each of these mountains appeals to us in a different way, and each is special for one reason or another. Our Moroccan adventure: Day 4 & 5 – Bye Toubkal, Bye Marrakech

What a luxury to be able to sleep until 8am! Well in my case it was more like tossing and turning in my sleeping bag – after being woken up by the flysheet flapping in the freshening wind, and then again by people getting ready for the summit attack, I can’t fall back to sleep. After breakfast in the refuge (bread, processed cheese and a good selection of jams) we pay our bill, pack the bags and set off for […]

Our Moroccan adventure: Day 3 – Jebel Toubkal, 4167m

Did I just recently say that getting up at 5am is getting up early? Well, today our alarms ring at 4am, but we’re so excited about what lies ahead that nobody’s complaining. It’s a cold morning so we get out of our sleeping bags, dress up quickly and head inside for breakfast. It’s too early to be served breakfast at the refuge, so we feast on stale bread, processed cheese, Soreen loaf and semolina, washed down with black tea – […]

Our Moroccan adventure: Day 2 – Imlil and Toubkal refuges

All five alarms ring in unison at 5am sharp and we scramble out of beds – it’s advised to be at the taxi rank early in the morning to find cheap transport to Imlil. It’s still dark when we get to Jamaa el-Fnaa, which looks totally different than the previous night; it’s almost deserted, there are only orange juice stalls and taxi drivers who, seeing a group of people with backpacks, surround us and offer a ride. Luckily they are […]
